Kuch to Log Kahenge.....
At lunch today, a few women collegues were discussing their maids animatedly.....
One of them said in a sarcastic tone, "These maids have turned so modern nowadays! I saw my maid on her off day shopping in the local market, wearing jeans, lipstick, and high heels!"
As the others on the table ooh-aahed at the thought....it made me think...what is this thing about people expecting a certain something from everyone?
Whats wrong in a maid wearing a jeans?
Given the considereation that jeans in India is still considered a so-called modern dress..but what's wrong in a maid wearing it???
Isn't she a human being who has her own likings...her own aspirations..her own young heart which wants to follow the crowd??
What is this "expectation" that we have from each other in the society?
The distant murmurs of...... "Log Kya Kahenge!?!" surround all of us.........but who are these "log"??? These log who watch you all the time?
As if where ever you go, whatever you do, every step and every breath you take.......you will be answerable not to yourself but to all and sundry!
Many hearts getbroken, many dreams are shattered......many ambitions are slaughtered lest this omnipresent statement crops up and the tongues belonging to the ones tracking us down, start wagging!
Yet the murmurs prevail and prevail........haunting ......causing endless worry and apprehension....
Where and when was this sentence first created?
And where and when will it expire?
It has even become difficult to imagine a world without having this sentence in the vocabulary........and Kishore Kumar's melodious words seem so true even after so many years......

You're absolutely right in saying kuch to log kehenge... logon ka kaam hai kehna. and we can do one of two things... bow down to that pressure exerted by the outside world, or actually stand up and say.. kehne do, aakhir yeh meri life hai.
What you have described is a phenomenon.... a deep social stigma imposed by generations of people who are constrained by their living, their way of thinking, and most importantly, people who have lost their humaneness in all of this.
So deep is this stigma that it surrounds each one of us... it is not just restricted to the homeowner - domestic help relationship but also to the parent-child, husband-wife, brother-sister relationship...
The important thing... how do u choose to conduct your life.... let these falsehoods dictate your actions, or actually break out and say... Yeh meri life hai!
